Fred R. Hamlin's name on the bill marks this as a touring stage version of L. Frank Baum's 1900 children's novel, *The Wonderful Wizard of Oz*, rather than the book itself. Within a few years of the novel's publication, theatrical companies were carrying Baum's story to small-town opera houses across the country, and this production belongs to that wave. Its costumed witches, scarecrows, and tin men suited the period's taste for spectacle, and the look of these characters later shaped how Halloween costumes were imagined.
