This poster borrows the trench-warfare phrase "over the top," the moment soldiers climbed out of their trenches to attack, and applies it to the home front, where citizens were urged to dig in with the garden as their battlefield. Its slogan, "The Seeds of Victory Insure the Fruits of Peace," reflects the wartime push for backyard and vacant-lot vegetable gardens that eased pressure on national food supplies. The National War Garden Commission, based in Washington, D.C., sponsored the campaign. The artist, Maginel Wright Enright, was an illustrator and the sister of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and her color work shows how commercial art was enlisted for civic causes during the First World War.
