The Peabody Institute was shaped more directly by one benefactor than most Baltimore institutions. George Peabody, an American-born merchant and banker working in London, endowed it in 1857 to bring music, learning, and books to his hometown. This picture shows the institute around the time of the Address of Welcome named in its title, a formal speech of greeting given for a public occasion. The institute's library, which opened in 1878, became one of its best-known features, with iron galleries rising in tiers around a tall, light-filled reading room. The building also reflects Baltimore's civic ambitions in the decades after the Civil War.
