A plump, winged cherub grips a garland of flowers, its round face and dimpled limbs typical of the putti that filled European painting and sculpture from the Renaissance onward. Such figures borrowed their form from classical Cupids and were adapted by Christian artists to suggest the innocence of heavenly children, often appearing beside the Virgin or in ceiling frescoes. Garlands like this one carried their own meaning, pointing to celebration, the fleeting nature of life, and the blessings of the season. Look closely at how the wings and garland are arranged, since artists used these details to signal whether a figure was earthly or divine.
