Every bond on this poster is cast as a "shot" at a German U-boat, a pointed way of tying a personal financial decision to the naval fight in the Atlantic. Germany's resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare in early 1917 had sunk Allied and neutral merchant ships, and the United States entered the war that April. The Liberty Loans, the government bonds sold to finance the war effort, depended on large numbers of ordinary buyers, so posters like this one addressed citizens directly. The record dates the print to about 1917, which places it during the first Liberty Loan drive.
