Balloon imagery took hold in America soon after the first hot-air ascents in France in 1783, when news of the flights spread quickly across the Atlantic. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, balloons were a common sight at county fairs, military demonstrations and city celebrations, and the aerial viewpoint they offered changed how people pictured landscape and town. Scenes like this one often set the craft against open sky or a crowd below. The spectators and the ground in such images often reveal as much about the occasion as the balloon does.
