Rendered in acrylic, ink, and graphite on a sheet measuring 51 by 61 centimeters, this portrait shows Nathaniel Owings, the American architect who co-founded the Chicago firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 1936. Under his leadership the firm became one of the most influential architectural practices in the country, known for clean, rational modernist buildings such as New York's Lever House, completed in 1952. The mix of paint, ink, and pencil lets the artist move between soft tonal modeling and sharper linear detail, a technique that suits a subject whose career was built on precise drawing and structural clarity. The portrait was made in 1964 and is held by the Library of Congress.
