A broad glass front rises above an open lawn and mature trees, the kind of transparent facade that marked many modernist library buildings after the Second World War. Architects of that period used steel frames and large panes to bring daylight deep into reading rooms and to tie the building to its grounds, so the landscape is part of the design. In black and white, the contrast among the reflective glass, the pale grass and the dark tree canopy becomes the main subject, with shape and light doing the work that color would otherwise do.
