Elizabeth Gurney Fry, the English Quaker named in this engraved portrait, spent much of her life improving conditions for women held in London's Newgate prison, where she began organizing schooling and clothing for inmates in the 1810s. Her later visits to prisons across Britain and the Continent made her one of the best-known reformers of her day. This plate was engraved by J.C. Buttre of New York expressly for the *Ladies' Repository*, a periodical aimed at women readers, which makes it a useful record of how American audiences came to know her reputation.
