Though it sits on a Halloween board, this poster belongs to America's World War I effort to stretch its food supply. Its title, *This is what God gives us*, presents the harvest as a gift that deserves careful use, a message the U.S. Food Administration pressed on households. Herbert Hoover led the agency, created in 1917, which promoted wheat-less and meatless meals so more food could reach American troops and Allied civilians in Europe. Its posters often relied on moral appeals, and this one shows how ordinary decisions at the dinner table were framed as patriotic duty.
