Autumn's clear skies give this Chicago poster its title, "October's Bright Blue Weather," which borrows the name of a poem by Helen Hunt Jackson, and its message, "A good time to read!" Made under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project around 1936 to 1940, it is a color silkscreen, a method that let program artists produce affordable posters in quantity. Although the gallery files it under Halloween, the poster belongs to the cooler reading season, and it shows how New Deal artists used simple, cheerful appeals to draw people toward books.
