Peabody, Massachusetts, was still called South Danvers until 1868, when it took the name of the London-born banker and philanthropist George Peabody, who had been raised in the town. By the later nineteenth century it was known across the country as a center of leather tanning and currying, with tanneries and related works lining the North River and drawing workers from Ireland, Canada, and southern and eastern Europe. The town's library and lecture institute, founded with Peabody's gift, gave its residents a civic center that set it apart from neighboring shoe-making Lynn. Railroad lines connected the town to Salem, Boston, and the North Shore, which kept goods and workers moving between the mills and the wider market.
