Adams, in the northern Berkshires of Massachusetts, was a mill town in 1882, built along the Hoosic River and the Hoosac Tunnel line that had opened through the hills a few years earlier. Its economy rested on textile and woolen mills, and the best known of them, the Berkshire Cotton Manufacturing Company, employed a large share of the population. The town was also the home of Susan B. Anthony, born there in 1820, and the 1882 bird's-eye view shows a community of church spires, factory blocks and tidy residential streets climbing the surrounding slopes. Residents of that day would have known Adams for its mills, its railroad connections and its place in the old Berkshire industrial economy.
