South Manchester, Connecticut, in 1880 was a mill village built around the silk works of the Cheney family, whose Cheney Brothers company made silk on the Hockanum River and employed a large share of the town's working population. The mills drew workers from Ireland, England, Scotland, and Sweden, and the village's streets, boarding houses, and churches reflected that mix of families who had come to find steady wages in the factories. Cheney Hall, the community building the family put up in the 1860s, served as a meeting place for lectures, concerts, and public gatherings, so civic life centered as much on the company as on town government. Residents of the period would have known South Manchester first as a place where silk was woven and shipped, and the mill buildings and company housing shaped its daily rhythms.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of South Manchester, Connecticut, drawn in 1880. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
