Shelton, Connecticut, in 1919 was a manufacturing community on the west bank of the Housatonic River in Fairfield County, where mills and factories lined the water and drew workers from surrounding farms and neighboring Ansonia and Derby. The town had only recently taken a new municipal form, and local government in these years was closely tied to the mill owners and the families whose names marked the streets. Residents were still adjusting to the close of the First World War in late 1918 and the return of local men from service, while the influenza epidemic that had struck the state the previous autumn was fresh in people's memories. This map records the town as it stood at that moment, with its factories, churches, schools, and rows of houses set out building by building.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Shelton, Connecticut, drawn in 1919. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
