Betty Compson, the silent-film actress, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news and celebrity photographs in the early twentieth century. Compson built a long career in silent pictures during the 1910s and 1920s and later moved into sound films, so the portrait captures a performer working in the busy studio era. The record gives no firm date, and the title itself comes from unverified caption data, so the exact year of the sitting remains uncertain. Bain's glass plates are valued today for documenting the faces and fashions of the period.
