The Davenport Public Library in Iowa is the subject here, a building that served as a civic anchor for a Mississippi River city in the early twentieth century. Public libraries of this era were often funded with help from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, whose grants paid for thousands of buildings across the United States between 1886 and 1919, and many took the classical or Beaux-Arts forms seen in buildings like this one. Libraries of that period also did more than lend books: they offered reading rooms, study space, and free access to information for working families, making them a point of pride for the towns that built them.
