The Deborah Cook Sayles Public Library in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, takes its name from the benefactor whose gift helped establish it, a common pattern for American public libraries of the late nineteenth century. Those libraries were often funded by wealthy local donors who saw free reading rooms as a way to give working families access to books and self-education. Pawtucket, an industrial mill town on the Blackstone River, was growing quickly at that time, and a public library answered the needs of a large population of factory workers and their children. Libraries like this one often became civic centers, where people came to read newspapers, borrow books and attend community events.
