Four bodies hang from a single scaffold in this stereograph, a record of the July 7, 1865, executions of the conspirators in the Lincoln assassination plot, carried out in the yard of the Old Arsenal Penitentiary in Washington. The title notes that only guards were admitted to the yard, so the picture shows a restricted, official scene rather than a crowd. The condemned included Mary Surratt, the first woman executed by the federal government. Made with the wet collodion process on glass, the paired images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth.
