The title points to a parable from the Gospels of Mark and Luke, in which a poor widow drops two small coins into the temple treasury and Jesus remarks that she has given more than the rich, who gave from their surplus. Stereographs like this one, made around 1876, were staged tableaux with posed figures, and viewers examined them through a stereoscope in the parlor. Scenes drawn from Scripture and moral stories were a popular choice, since they offered both entertainment and edification. The card's catalog number, 94, suggests it belonged to a numbered series from the publisher, Melander & Bro.
