A king and a witch share the frame in this wood engraving, a scene from the tale of the Sleeping Beauty, published as an illustration in a book of that title around 1868. The story, known from Charles Perrault's 1697 version and the Brothers Grimm's "Little Briar Rose," turns on a curse laid by an uninvited sorceress at a royal christening, which makes the witch the source of the tale's dread. Wood engraving was the standard way to print pictures alongside text in mid-nineteenth-century books and magazines, and its dense, fine lines give the scene the dark, old-fashioned mood that makes it a natural fit for a Halloween display.
