In 1881, Higganum was a mill village in the town of Haddam, on the east side of the Connecticut River in Middlesex County. Its economy rested on the Higganum River, whose falls powered grist and sawmills, and on surrounding farms that supplied produce and dairy goods to river towns. Like much of the Connecticut Valley, Higganum drew part of its livelihood from river traffic and the growing rail network that linked small manufacturing villages to Hartford and New Haven. Residents would have known the place for its quiet mill-pond setting, its church and village green, and the steady work of its shops and farms. The street-by-street detail in this 1881 view records a community still shaped by water power before the larger industrial changes of the coming decades.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Higganum, Connecticut, drawn in 1881. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
