Jewett City, a mill village in the town of Griswold in eastern Connecticut, sat along the Quinebaug River in 1889, and its economy rested on the water power that turned the textile and manufacturing works lining the banks. Workers and their families lived in the dense streets and tenements close to those mills, and the village's identity was tied to the work of the factory day. The rail line through the valley linked the village to New London and the wider New England market, carrying cloth and goods out and bringing coal, cotton, and wool in. In 1889, residents would have known Jewett City first as a working river town, where the mill whistle set the rhythm of daily life and the church, store, and lodge hall served as the center of social and civic activity.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Jewett City, Connecticut, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
