Four children and a sled take center stage on this card, which greets the viewer with "Heureux Noël," French for "Merry Christmas," rather than the English phrasing common on cards of the period. Snowy play and sprigs of evergreen and foliage were stock Christmas motifs from the late 1800s, when color printing made greeting cards affordable for ordinary households. Such cards were meant to be sent and treasured by friends and family, so their sentimental scenes of childhood say as much about how the holiday was imagined as about the printer's craft.
