A young drummer boy marches across this card beside a sprig of holly, two motifs that have long stood for the holiday season together. The figure draws on "The Little Drummer Boy," a carol written in 1941 and made famous by later recordings, in which a poor child offers his drumming as a gift to the infant Jesus. Holiday cards like this were mass-produced in large numbers from the early 1900s onward, usually in color printing, and were meant to be mailed to relatives and friends. Many of these cards show the printers' layered colors, which give the drum's metallic sheen and the holly's glossy leaves a surprisingly lively look.
