Titled "Shooting the Christmas turkey," this lithograph uses a holiday image to comment on the 1848 presidential race. Its subjects include Zachary Taylor, Lewis Cass, Martin Van Buren, and Millard Fillmore, along with Horace Greeley and David Wilmot, whose namesake proviso sought to bar slavery from territory won in the Mexican War. The Free Soil Party, which nominated Van Buren that year, drew antislavery Democrats and Whigs away from the major parties, and the print reflects how sharply that split divided the field. Published in New York by James Baillie, it is typical of the topical political prints sold to the public in that decade.
