A winged angel plucks a golden harp trailing long ribbons, a figure that draws on a long tradition of heavenly music in Western art. Angels with harps appear in medieval manuscripts and Renaissance altarpieces, where the instrument signaled praise and the sound of paradise. Later artists, especially in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, softened and decorated the motif for greeting cards, book plates and devotional prints, which is where the ribbons and bright gilding became especially popular. Look closely at the flowing lines of the drapery and wings, which show how the genre shifted from solemn religious imagery toward sentimental, decorative charm.
