This glass negative is catalogued under the name Ernest Thompson Seton, though the record gives no date and the name comes from the Bain News Service caption cards, which were not verified. Seton, born in England and raised in Canada before settling in the United States, wrote and illustrated animal stories and nature guides that taught many Americans to observe the outdoors. In 1910 he helped found the Boy Scouts of America, drawing on the outdoor-skills ideas of his Woodcraft Indians movement. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, supplied portraits of public figures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and plates like this one reflect that trade.
