Two passengers sit in the back of an open automobile, but neither the man nor the woman has been identified, and the record gives no date or location. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency founded in 1899 that sold news pictures to newspapers across the country. Bain's photographers covered politics, sports, disasters and everyday city life, and their plates were typically sent out quickly for publication. Glass plates of this kind were the standard working medium of news photography in the early decades of the twentieth century, so the picture offers a glimpse of how motoring and casual travel looked in that period.
