The only identifier for this negative is the surname Miller, a title the Library of Congress marks as unverified and taken from data on the Bain News Service negatives or caption cards. George Grantham Bain built his news photo service in New York in the early twentieth century, supplying newspapers with pictures of people, events and city life through the 1920s. Its glass negatives, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were made for fast reproduction in print, so each plate reflects the practical work of a working press photographer. With no date or sitter confirmed, the picture is best understood through its period and the agency that made it.
