Tarrant's Seltzer Aperient was a fizzy laxative powder sold in the late nineteenth century, and this advertisement carries its own promise in the title, "Perfect Health." Like many patent medicine advertisements of the period, it presents a remedy for the body's ordinary complaints as a route to lasting vigor, a claim that reflected both the commercial pitch and the widespread anxiety about digestion and regularity of the era. Such advertisements were often bold in their promises and sparse in evidence, and they circulated widely in newspapers, almanacs, and printed cards. Their language is worth reading closely as a record of how medicine was marketed before federal rules on drug labeling tightened in the early twentieth century.
