The caption pairs Tripoli with a site at Derna and the word PISA, but the Bain News Service marked its title as unverified, so the subject deserves some caution. Derna lies on the Libyan coast east of Tripoli, and Italian forces seized it in late 1911 during the Italo-Turkish War, a campaign that drew wide attention in American newspapers. The Bain agency supplied photographs of news events like this to illustrated papers, which helps explain how scenes from distant North African fronts reached New York readers so quickly.
