Its title, *Kept Waiting*, sets up a small everyday scene: someone with a few idle minutes and a cigarette to fill them. The ad ran in *The Graphic*, a London illustrated weekly, in 1917, the third year of the First World War, when tobacco was widely treated as a modest comfort at home and at the front. The De Reszke name came from the Polish-born opera singer Jan de Reszke, so the brand borrowed the polish of the concert hall to sell an ordinary habit. Advertisements of this kind often relied on a short story in a single drawing, and this one is worth reading for how it frames smoking as a pleasant way to pass the time.
