Few pictures on this board pair a cherub with such a dense mass of flowers, roses and lace. Here the angel is rendered as a decorative collage, a style that flourished in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when paper scraps, die-cut lace and printed blossoms were pasted into greeting cards, devotional keepsakes and scrapbooks. Cards like this were often exchanged for birthdays, first communions or religious holidays, so the image worked as both sentiment and ornament. Look closely at how the lace edging frames the figure, which reflects the Victorian taste for layered, tactile surfaces.
