Rupprecht, Crown Prince of Bavaria, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the portraits the Bain News Service released from its files in the years around the First World War. Rupprecht was a senior German commander on the Western Front, and his name appeared often in American newspapers of that era, which is why news photographers kept images of him on hand. The Bain collection, held by the Library of Congress, is valued for documenting people in the news of that period, and its glass negatives capture the formal style of press photography before film replaced them. The record does not give a date, so the exact occasion is unknown.
