This albumen print shows the Oberlin men who were jailed in Cuyahoga County after helping free John Anderson, a man who had escaped slavery in Missouri, from federal custody in Wellington, Ohio, in September 1858. Their arrest and imprisonment in Cleveland drew wide attention in the antislavery press, and the case became a test of the Fugitive Slave Act in northern courts. The photograph was taken in April 1859 by T.J. Rice of Oberlin, a town known for its abolitionist activism, and the caption card that accompanies the record is unverified, so its date and details are worth checking against other sources.
