The airship in this glass negative is an Astra-Torres, a non-rigid design named for the French manufacturer Société Astra and the Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo, whose triangular-envelope layout set it apart from the cigar-shaped craft common at the time. The record ties the picture to Aldershot, the English garrison town in Hampshire long associated with British army training, and to the "Mays" in the title. The title comes from data the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or caption card, so the location and subject are not independently confirmed. The Bain collection holds press photographs from the early twentieth century, when airships were being tested for military and commercial use.
