Five boys stand in a row outside a plain wooden building, each holding up a tobacco tag, the small paper or metal tokens once packed with cigarettes and cigars as a trading card or premium. The board places the picture among fish and marine subjects, which is a loose fit, so the tags themselves are the thing to look at: their printed designs were often of fish, sailors and other popular motifs meant to draw young collectors. Photographs like this one, taken around the turn of the twentieth century, show how children traded and displayed these pieces, and how tobacco makers used them to build loyalty.
