Harvard's fraternity houses in Cambridge, just across the river from Boston, were a common subject for the Bain News Service, the photo agency whose glass negatives make up this collection at the Library of Congress. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data written by the agency, so the exact scene and year are uncertain. Still, the subject places it among the early 1900s pictures of student life in the Boston area, when fraternity initiations were a well-known and sometimes rowdy part of college society. Bain's negatives like this one are useful for seeing how such rituals were staged for the press.
