Monroe, Michigan, sits where the River Raisin meets Lake Erie, and in 1866 it was a county seat still shaped by its French founding in the 1780s and by the River Raisin battle of 1813, when British and allied forces defeated an American force and many captured Americans were killed. By the time this view was drawn, the river mills, the lake harbor, and the railroad that had reached the town in the late 1830s carried grain, lumber, and manufactured goods out of the region. The Civil War had just ended, and the men who came home from Michigan regiments were returning to a town that was rebuilding its trade and its civic life. Residents of the period would have known Monroe as a river port with a long memory, a place where the older French street pattern still showed beside newer American blocks.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Monroe, Michigan, drawn in 1866. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
