Muskegon, Michigan, in 1889 was a lake port whose lumber boom was approaching its height and beginning to show strain. Pine from the northern forests still arrived by river and rail, but the best timber within easy reach was thinning, and mill owners were watching Wisconsin and the South for their next supply. Many of the men who had made their fortunes in the 1860s and 1870s were putting part of their profits into banks, churches, and brick commercial blocks along the downtown streets. Residents would have known their town as a busy harbor on Muskegon Lake, where schooners and steamers waited to load boards bound for Chicago and ports beyond.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Muskegon, Michigan, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
