The caption comes from Theodore O'Hara's 1847 poem "The Bivouac of the Dead," written after the Mexican War, and paired with a child holding a flag and a wreath of flowers, it points to the custom of honoring the dead each spring. Decoration Day, the forerunner of Memorial Day, began after the Civil War, when families and communities gathered to lay flowers on soldiers' graves. Images like this one, often printed as postcards and greeting cards, carried that sentiment into ordinary homes. Placing a young figure at the center of the scene suggested that the duty to remember the fallen would pass to the next generation.
