The eighth Austrian war loan appeal, designed by W. Kühn in 1918, asks viewers to buy government bonds as the war was nearing its end. Its catalog subjects pair war finance with victory celebrations and columns, which suggests the designer drew on triumphal imagery to sell debt to a population worn down by years of fighting. War bonds were a major way the Austro-Hungarian state paid for the war, and posters like this one were displayed in cities and towns to reach ordinary savers. Its large color lithograph format would have made it hard to miss on a street wall.
