Printed in German, the poster's command "Zeichnet" ("Subscribe") is the first thing a viewer reads, and the Wiener Kommerzial-Bank named at the foot marks it as a Vienna bank's appeal to customers. It advertises the Seventh War Loan (7. Kriegsanleihe), one of a series of bond issues by which Austria-Hungary financed its war effort in 1917. Such loans depended on ordinary savers buying government debt, so posters like this one circulated widely in cities and towns to turn patriotic feeling into subscriptions.
