Tall grass and a scatter of dandelions frame this green tractor, which sits in the foreground as the main subject rather than as a piece of working machinery. Pictures of farm equipment from the early and middle twentieth century often show tractors at rest, and that quiet setting says as much about rural life as the machine does. Green paint was a common color on many tractor makes of the period, and the weeds growing up around the wheels hint at a machine that had been left idle for a season or longer, a familiar sight on family farms as mechanization spread and older equipment was set aside.
