A row of six attached houses anchors this view of Washington, DC, with repeated facades and shared party walls that defined much of the city's residential building. Rowhouses like these went up in large numbers during the nineteenth century, when builders filled city blocks with similar brick fronts, stoops and cornices that varied only slightly from one house to the next. Their regularity makes them useful records of how neighborhoods were laid out and how ordinary families lived in the city. The "(2)" in the title indicates that this is one of several related views.
