Park Trammell, a Democrat from Florida, is the subject of this 1917 portrait, a year he began serving in the U.S. Senate. The photograph came from Harris & Ewing, the Washington, D.C., studio that became known for formal portraits of members of Congress, federal officials, and other public figures in the early twentieth century. Its timing is notable because the United States entered World War I that spring, and the Senate was soon taken up with war legislation. Portraits like this one document the faces of the lawmakers who debated those decisions.
