Bull" Durham was a loose-tobacco brand from the Bull Durham works in Durham, North Carolina, and this picture's title, "The Aristocracy of 'Bull' Durham Hand-made Cigarettes," points to the advertising pitch of the period: rolling your own cigarettes was framed as a refined habit. The company packed small muslin sacks of its tobacco with a paper packet of cigarette papers, and the coupons and trade images it issued helped make the brand familiar across the country. Notice how the wording plays on social rank, a common device in late nineteenth-century tobacco advertising, when a cheap, portable smoke was being sold as a mark of taste.
