Vineland, New Jersey, in 1885 was a young farming town in Cumberland County, about thirty miles from Philadelphia. Charles K. Landis had founded it in 1861 as a temperance colony, and its wide, grid-laid streets reflected his plan for orderly settlement on land that had been sandy pine barren. Growers there were known for grapes, small fruits, and peaches, and the rail lines that carried produce to Philadelphia and New York were central to the local economy. The town's identity rested on its farms, its churches and schools, and its ban on the saloon, which Landis's supporters promoted as proof that a community could be built on sobriety and cooperative agriculture. This 1885 view records those streets, houses, and business blocks as they stood during the colony's first generation.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Vineland, New Jersey, drawn in 1885. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
