Westfield, New Jersey, in 1929 was a leafy commuter town in Union County, where many residents rode the railroad to jobs in New York City each weekday morning. Its stations and tree-lined residential streets reflected a community that had grown quickly since the early 1900s as families moved out from the city in search of yards and quieter streets. Local life centered on its churches, schools, shops along the downtown business blocks, and civic clubs, while farmland and orchards still ringed the edges of town. The Battle of Short Hills in June 1777, fought in the surrounding countryside during the Revolution, was part of the local memory that residents carried alongside their newer identity as a suburb. The October stock market crash later that year would soon reshape the prosperity that had made such commuter towns possible.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Westfield, New Jersey, drawn in 1929. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
